A prolific singer-songwriter, his songs have been covered by Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, and others. He won a Grammy for 2009's "High Wide & Handsome." An actor, he appeared in films by Scorsese and Burton, TV's M.A.S.H., and Broadway's Pump Boys and Dinettes. He's collaborated with John Doe and Aimee Mann.
