Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek, born in Mysen, Norway, is renowned for his sharp-edged tone and long, sustained notes. Associated with ECM Records since 1970's "Afric Pepperbird," he blends jazz with folk, Indian, and Middle Eastern influences. Key works include "Witchi-Tai-To" and collaborations like "Officium" with the Hilliard Ensemble. His partnerships span artists like Keith Jarrett, Bill Frisell, and Ustad Fateh Ali Khan. Notable achievements include pioneering classical crossover with the Hilliard Ensemble, with his work often charting in classical, jazz, and ambient genres.
Trilok Gurtu, born in Bombay, India, bridges eastern and western music through his percussion and vocal improvisations. Named "best percussionist" by Downbeat, he blends genres with jazz, rock, and classical influences. Collaborated with Don Cherry, John McLaughlin, and Larry Coryell; a former member of Oregon. Known for his eclectic style, he teaches and performs worldwide.
