Ella Jane Fitzgerald, sometimes referred to as the "First Lady of Song," was an American jazz vocalist, songwriter, and composer. Raised in challenging circumstances, she rose to national fame in the late 1930s with the Chick Webb Orchestra, notably with her chart-topping rendition of "A-Tisket, A-Tasket." She embarked on a highly successful solo career under manager Norman Granz, recording an iconic multi-volume songbook series and pioneering a dazzling, improvisational scat singing style. Over her seven-decade career, she collaborated with jazz legends like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, won 14 Grammy Awards, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
