Known for radio broadcasts and high-quality French music under Paul Paray, it faced severe financial issues before rejuvenation in the restored Orchestra Hall under Neeme Järvi and then Leonard Slatkin, continuing its tradition of excellence and innovation.

Chris Thile, born in Oceanside, CA, is a virtuoso mandolinist and singer, known for progressive bluegrass. Founding member of Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers, he won Grammys for collaborations with Yo-Yo Ma and Punch Brothers. He hosted NPR's Live from Here, and has worked with Brad Mehldau and Béla Fleck. His solo albums include Deceiver and Laysongs.
