Astor Pantaleón Piazzolla was an Argentine tango composer, bandoneón player, and arranger who revolutionized traditional tango into a new style termed nuevo tango, incorporating elements from jazz and classical music. Born in Mar del Plata in 1921, he spent much of his childhood in New York City, where he was exposed to jazz and classical masters like Bach, and began playing the bandoneón as a child prodigy. Returning to Argentina, he played in traditional tango orchestras, notably Aníbal Troilo's, before studying classical composition under Alberto Ginastera and later Nadia Boulanger in Paris, who encouraged him to pursue his unique tango experiments. He formed celebrated ensembles, including the Octeto Buenos Aires and his signature 1960 quintet, creating complex, dramatic compositions intended for listening rather than dancing, such as Adiós Nonino, Libertango, and Oblivion. Despite initial fierce resistance from traditionalists in his homeland, his avant-garde fusion gained immense international acclaim, securing his legacy as one of the major musical figures of the 20th century before his death in 1992.
