Ilaiyaraaja (born Gnanathesigan) is an Indian musician, composer, arranger, conductor, orchestrator, multi-instrumentalist, lyricist, and playback singer widely regarded as one of the country's greatest film composers. Popularly known as "Isaignani" and "The Maestro," he has composed over 7,000 songs and provided film scores for more than 1,000 films, predominantly in Tamil cinema as well as other Indian languages. Noted for introducing Western classical music harmonies and string arrangements into mainstream Indian film music, he became the first South Asian to compose a full symphony, which was performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. A recipient of the prestigious Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awards, he has also won five National Film Awards and has served as a nominated Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha since 2022.
